Larry Rivers Republique De Guinee, for Andy Warhol, Inscribed in ink to Andy Warhol (from the Estate of Tim Hunt, Warhol agent and Foundation executive) 1977
Description
This wryly political mixed media color pochoir with acrylic airbrush and pencil by Larry Rivers was gifted by the artist to Andy Warhol and contains an inscription by the artist on the lower right recto (front). The inscription, written in blue color pencil reads:
For Andy W
from
Larry R & Friends
Republique de Guinee - is the Republic of Guinea, a West African country. Rivers' work is cleverly designed as a geographical postage stamp - with the capital of Conakry written as a horizontal band. The figure depicted is clearly a woman - with large breasts. Rivers created this work in 1977, and it makes reference to contemporaneous political events in the West African country: The Market Women's Revolt of 1977 was a series of large demonstrations and riots across Guinea brought about by the imposition of government-set prices for goods sold in the country's public markets. The riots began on 27 August 1977 when women vendors in Conakry's Medina Market began rioting against the "economic police," who were responsible for enforcing the government's price controls and were often corrupt; the riots spread throughout the country.
After Warhol died, this work was acquired by the late Tim Hunt, the gallerist and former agent for the Andy Warhol Foundation, and was sold by Hunt's widow, the best selling author Tama Janowitz. ("Slaves of New York").
This is a rare, inscribed artist proof aside from the regular edition of 100. Framed and ready to hang.
