This elusive artwork is a photorealistic lithograph by German-American artist Alex Szkola, titled "34th Street". It depicts a corner restaurant in Manhattan, focusing on complex reflections in glass and metal surfaces. It takes as its subject a corner restaurant in Manhattan and is an intriguing examination of color, light and (most importantly) reflections. Through the maze of reflections from the glass and metals our eyes fix upon the central figure and subject -- the waitress behind the counter. One may at this point be reminded of Manet's famous painting of the serving girl in the Folies Bergeres with the lengthy mirror behind her. Both Manet's painting and Alex Szkola's 34th Street brilliantly contrasts the enigmatic, silent figure of the girl to the transitory confusions of the light and colors around her.
