The present work is an expressive gestural sketch by New Jersey-based artist Tracy Pollock, who makes a living painting pet portraits for other people. The work has been framed and is ready to hang. Tracy is also a professional art restorer – so she spends a lot of time closely examining the physiological aspects of both pets and art. And she is owner of two beautiful cats, Gigi and Renee.
“Pets of the Pandemic” gave Tracy the opportunity to create a portrait of her own pets. The work, entitled “Gigi Feeling a Little Off Center” – captures the synergistic way cats– deeply sentient and sensitive creatures, respond and reflect our own psychological sense of imbalance in these precarious times. In her statement accompanying her winning submission, Tracy explains: "Gigi, 5lbs, geriatric, was in my studio while I was painting. I looked down and her position just struck me. So I grabbed a pad and did this sketch on the floor. Two separated cats, me in a condo, comforted by love, patience and impermanence.”
