This unique, signed painting was exhibited in the exhibition "Thelma Appel: Milestones" at the Marie Louise Trichet Art Gallery, Wisdom House, Litchfield, CT, Fall, 2017. "The Moon" is part of Thelma Appel's original series of large paintings based upon the Major Arcana of the Tarot Deck, representing archetypes of human experience and characters - from a Kabbalistic perspective. Here, Appel creatively reimagines the iconic "MOON - from the perspective of an earthly landscape. A deeper meaning of the Moon cards in Tarot suggests cycles of nature (cycles of the moon), hidden and esoteric truths, sometimes even deception, and a great sense of yearning. In this illuminated night landscape all of these metaphysical elements are suggested by the animals and nature. It is also a waterscape, with Dolphins (also carriers of esoteric knowledge and communications), as the Moon, astrologically is cancer - the water sign This exquisite painting combines Appel's talents as an illustrator and a landscape painter with her unique sense of fantasy and abstraction. Combining her formal background in illustration, abstraction, landscape, figuration, and her interest in mysticism, spirituality and Kabbalah - Appel creates a uniquely original interpretation of the ages old Tarot.
