Robert Smithson is so famous many collectors do not realize that he died in 1973 at the age of only 35; hence hand signed pieces like this are extraordinarily rare; almost impossible to find anywhere else in the world. In 1969 the Jewish Museum in New York commissioned Robert Smithson to create a New Year's poster. In contemplating the design he ultimately settled on the current work, "Mirror Trail" which depicts a series of mirrors implanted in a snow-crusted New Jersey field, with the date 5730 inscribed below. In the Jewish calendar 5730 is translated into the year 1969.
Interestingly enough this was not the original, intended design. The original design was of a photograph showing the date, [5]730, written in Hebrew letters in red earth on a chalky ground. The work was titled: 5730-RED CLAY FROM HEBRON PLACED AT MT. MORIAH. Hebron is a city some nineteen miles south of Jerusalem, and Mount Moriah is the Temple Mount, a site sacred to the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faiths. A contemporaneous article in October 2012 edition of Art Forum describes the story in more detail.) The present work is signed and dated by the artist - extremely rare. Hand signed editions of this print rarely come to market - the last time was a decade ago.
