British Pop pioneer R.B. Kitaj's portrait of David Hockney and his former lover Peter Schlesinger is rarely seen on the market, as so many other editions are already in the permanent collection of major institutions and museums. Kitaj first met the artist David Hockney at the Royal College of Art in 1960. Kitaj recalled their first meeting: 'a young man with large glasses and short black hair who began our first week to make the finest drawings of the human figure I had seen in any school'. The pair became lifelong friends. Kitaj made this portrait of Hockney and his then partner Peter Schlesinger when he was in California in 1968. Kitaj and Hockney were both teaching a Berkeley that year. In 2018, Britain's "The Guardian" newspaper published a major feature article on this work, which was included in an exhibition "Pop! Art in a Changing Britain" at Pallant House. Below is a link to the article:

And of course in 2019, David Hockney's painting of his former lover Peter sold at Christie's for nearly 91 million dollars.
