Peter Anthony Stroud was a British-born painter and sculptor who worked as a Constructivist artist until the late 1950s, when his practice evolved toward geometric abstraction. In 1960, he exhibited in the landmark Situation exhibition at the RBA Galleries in London, a show that gave rise to the "Situation Group" of young British abstract painters working at a large scale, and the same year held his first one-man exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. He later taught at Bennington College in Vermont before joining the faculty at Rutgers University, where he spent the remainder of his career. His paintings are characterized by precise geometric structures, optical rhythm, and a rigorous investigation of color relationships within self-imposed formal systems. His work is held in the collections of the Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, among others.
