In a letter dated March 26, 1962 from Carton to a previous owner, he notes that the present work was painted in Provincetown and described it as "a favorite of mine. A crescendo of intense color saturation." A copy of the letter accompanies the lot.

Signature: Signed "Carton" l.l., also signed and inscribed "Carton 1035" on the reverse, identified on a label affixed to the stretcher. Minor craquelure and alligatoring throughout.
