This might be the closest your dinner table will ever get to performance art. When Marina Abramović created her limited edition four-piece porcelain plate sets for Bernardaud, her intention was to make dinnerware that helps us savor and ritualize our meals. Each motif closely reflects the artist's personal life. "To me, the act of eating implies pure simplicity, so I used decorations that are minimal and personal," she says.
She calls the two sets "misfits" because each set has plates that vary in size, shape and pattern. Together, the sets can be used to serve what Abramović calls a "Misfit Dinner for Two", or they can be used separately to serve "A Lonely Dinner for One." This set includes a small bread plate featuring the artist's own family crest and a dinner plate adorned with a detail from her artwork Golden Lips from 2009. The star-shaped dish represents the communist star, a symbol that was ever-present in Abramović's childhood and life in ex-Yugoslavia. The golden serving platter was conceived as a counterpart to the star and represents the sun. Set of four. Crest bread plate 6.75" diam. Gold Lips dinner plate 10.5" diam., Gold Moon serving platter 12.25" diam., Red star plate 9.5" diam.
