Makes a memorable gift for the discerning and cultured individual who loves fine art and literature.
Two bound volume illustrated books, held in a slipcase, accompanied by 10 original drypoint etchings by Louise Bourgeois, numbered 11/100 on the colophon and hand signed by both Louise Bourgeois and Arthur Miller. Prints include: 10 drypoints, 1 with roulette and 1 with punching; 8 photolithographs; and 1 photolithograph of Louise Bourgeois (artist) with Arthur Miller (author) by Inge Morath. (There was a separate, larger Trade edition of 1200 that was not signed by both artists and didn't include original etchings as the present work. The present work is from the signed and numbered edition of only 100).
BOURGEOIS, Louise. Homely Girl, A Life. By Arthur Miller. With 10 drypoint etchings by Bourgeois. Two volumes. Folio, original beige half morocco over grey cloth, preserved in a grey cloth slipcase. New York: Peter Blum, 1992. An excellent example of this highly effective example of the combination of line literature, fine art and the art of making books. The legendary playwright Arthur Miller gave renowned artist Louise Bourgeois an unpublished story for which she provided two sets of illustrations. The publisher issued both, hence the two volumes, one containing 10 original drypoint etchings, and the other a series of offset lithographs from color photographs. The publisher also issued two versions. The one most commonly encountered consisted of an edition of 1200 copies with reproductions of the etchings.
However, the present two volume are the far more scarce Deluxe limited edition, illustrated with original etchings. One of an edition of 100 copies with the colophon page hand signed by both Arthur Miller and Louise Bourgeois.
Arthur Miller's classic literature won him numerous awards, including the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the 1984 Kennedy Center Honors, and the 2001 Premium Imperiale. "[The author's] ability to sum up in clear, unequivocal prose . . . makes the reader wish that these stories were longer. . . ." (The New York Times Book Review). Many people in the general public remember Arthur Miller because he was once married to Marilyn Monroe.
