In the 1970's Abstract Expressionist Lee Krasner began experimenting with hard-edged forms and cut-outs, often with of one or two brightly painted colors. Embrace is an excellent example of her work from this period.This piece has special significance because it was commissioned for the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, continuing the great Olympic tradition of commissioning artists to create artwork celebrating the games.
Lee Krasner was of course married to Jackson Pollock, and was instrumental in promoting both of their artistic legacies through the Pollock-Krasner Foundation
