Carnegie Museum Portfolio # 28/30 from the Estate of a former director of the Carnegie Museum (the print and included hand signed colophon are unnumbered, and have been separated from the portfolio which contained works by other artists.)
This mid century Abstract Expressionist lithograph by Joan Mitchell, published in 1972, and printed by Maeght, is one of only 30 that was hand signed, as part of the Deluxe Edition (VIP) of the Fresh Air School portfolio. In 1972, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania exhibited paintings of Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell and Walasse Ting together in a show entitled Fresh Air School. This print and the full portfolio were published as a fundraiser in conjunction with the exhibition, in a regular edition of approximately 1000. However, separate from the unsigned edition, was this hand signed edition of only 30 - reserved exclusively for the museum curator, director, major donors, VIPs and trustees. Rarely seen on the market, this is one of the 30 hand signed works.
It was acquired from the estate of a former director of the Carnegie Museum.
Note the present listing is for the Joan Mitchell work alone as shown. The Mitchell lithograph is unnumbered, but it is from the portfolio numbered 28/30. Joan Mitchell chose to sign her print in ink on the colophon page of the portfolio, under a quote of hers, which accompanies the artwork and has been affixed to the back of the frame.
