David Hockney - Ojai Festival print (Baggott, 81), 1981
Lithograph in colors on wove paper, signed in pencil and dated on the front. An unnumbered proof, aside from the regular limited edition of 100. Literature: Baggott 81 Ojai Festival (Baggott 81) by David Hockney is a 1981 color lithograph created to commemorate the annual music festival in Ojai, California. (The Ojai Classical and Contemporary Music Festival took place in Ojai, California from May 29 - 31.) Rendered in red and blue crayon-like lines, the composition blends architectural and musical motifs with a sense of playful abstraction. A brick structure occupies the lower half of the work, inscribed with the festival’s name and date, while the top surface resembles a music staff with notes. Above, rhythmic waveforms and sketchy linework suggest sound waves or musical phrasing. Hockney’s casual, almost childlike line style evokes spontaneity and celebration, mirroring the experimental and intimate spirit of the Ojai Festival. In the early 1980s, the festival commissioned some of the country's top artists to create exclusive limited edition prints to raise funds to promote the festival. This is Hockney's contribution to the effort. Today it's considered a rare print, pencil signed and un-numbered proof, aside from the limited edition of only 100. A lovely Hockney piece which makes a terrific gift - especially for music lovers and California dreamers.
This work is held in its original red wood frame under UV plexiglass.
