A very special piece in fine condition with fine provenance, as it was acquired from the private collection of art historians Jacob and Aviva Bal Teshuva. The work is held in the original titled and numbered sleeve, and it would look terrific splayed open and framed in a shadow box and/or framed as one sheet. This impressive self-portrait is rarely seen in the open market as it was created as a fundraiser for the patrons of the Smithsonian. The etching laid down on a wove paper triptych. It is boldly signed on integral window matte "C. Close," in pencil. Triptych imprinted on verso "Chuck Close, Self Portrait, 1996 / Photo engraving on silk tissue measuring 6" x 4,25" and mounted on Hahnemuhle paper. Edition of 200 for The Archives of American Arts, Smithsonian Institution. / Printed at The Spring Street Workshop. Published by Pace Editions." Numbered in pencil "167/200" below imprint. Accompanied by an imprinted card with title and attribution - that it was given through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. N. Berry and the Eli Broad Family Foundation, in honor of Chuck Close and the Archives of American Art.
