Phil, from the Rubber Stamp Portfolio (Uniquely Signed), 1976

Print on Strathmore 3-Ply Paper, with accompanying envelope
8 × 8 in
20.3 × 20.3 cm

Limited Edition 953/1000 (Uniquely Hand Signed)

Chuck Close exceptionally signed this limited edition print boldly in black marker on the recto; it is also numbered 953/1000 pencil versoThis work is extremely rare and highly collectible when hand signed by Chuck Close.

Nobody you know will have this one which the artist signed for the gallery back in 2017. It is pencil numbered 953/1000 -and originally was an unsigned edition. However, exceptionally, in 2015, Chuck Close signed this boldly in black marker for the present owner - our gallery's director. We know of only one other that the artist signed by hand from this edition of 1000.
More about the portfolio, where this print was acquired:
The complete Rubber Stamp Portfolio is comprised of 13 rubber stamp prints, in black and white and color, from the artists Carl Andre, Richard Artschwager, Daniel Buren, Chuck Close, Barry LeVa, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, Robert Mangold, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Don Nice, Myron Stout, Tom Wesselmann, and Joe Zucker.
In addition to being uniquely signed by Chuck Close 40 years later (!!) -- on the verso of the print is the artist's name stamped by Unity Engraving Company, Inc., and the print is housed in its original portfolio sleeve/envelope which is desirable, as they often separated for framing. Never framed; fine condition.
Printer: A. Colish Press
Paper: Strathmore 3-Ply
Distributor: The Museum of Modern Art, New York
Stamped by: Unity Engraving Company, Inc.
This is a terrific purchase for Chuck Close fans, because it's a well known print MOMA's 1970s Rubber Stamp Print - of one of the artist's most iconic images (his longtime friend and artistic muse Philip Glass) - but uniquely signed in black marker by the artist.
Snag it while you can. Unframed but will look terrific framed. Also accompanied by the original Rubber Stamp envelope which is rare too
