Tracey Emin

Beirut, 2006

Offset lithograph printed in black

Pencil signed and numbered 99/100

Tracey Emin, an art world superstar and one of the most popular artists in the UK (and worldwide) became famous for once submitting a filthy unmade bed ("My Bed") to the Turner Prize (she was shortlisted but didn't win. However soon after Charles Saatchi acquired "My Bed" and the celebrated work was eventually sold for millions of dollars at Christie's.) Tracey Emin was born in Cyprus, Turkey as has created autobiographical works about her life, her family and her heritage. In 2006, she became enamored with the city of Beirut, Lebanon and set about photographing this fascinating and complex Middle Eastern City: 'I used to watch Hawaii Five-O with my father and he'd say to me, "This is Beirut, baby. This is the future."' Around that time, Emin created this Minimalistic black and white lithograph simply entitled BEIRUT.  She initially began selling the work through Emin International, but abruptly ceased sales and destroyed the first run.  In apologizing to a client for the delay in sending the print, the artist wrote that she was not happy with the first printing and destroyed the edition. It is not clear however, if she re-did the complete run, or simply fulfilled previous orders.  Thus, even though the stated edition of this work is 100, it may not have been a complete run.
