Description
Rare Mi Chou Gallery poster "introducing the brilliant modern artist Roy Lichtenstein", 1962
Offset Lithograph
21 4/5 × 17 inches
This is a highly collectible, historic 1962 exhibition invitation by the Mi Chou Gallery in NYC, in collaboration with Leo Castelli (Lichtenstein's dealer) and Kennedy Galleries in New York City. The show was for works from the "Hudson River School" of painting, but also promised "Several important works by the brilliant modern artist Mr. Roy Lichtenstein." The Mi Chou Gallery, located at West 56th Street in Manhattan was best known for introducing Chinese art to Western audiences -- one of the few galleries in the late 1950s and early 1960s to do so. This exhibition was a departure from their regular programming. This flyer was acquired from the Estate of Ohio artist Joseph O' Sickey, personal friend of Mr. Lichtenstein - given directly from Mr. Lichtenstein. Interestingly enough, the only other copy we've ever seen of this poster/flyer came from the same estate - Joseph O'Sickey - but haven't seen it anywhere else. For Lichtenstein archivists, fans, scholars and lovers - this is a rare find from the early 1960s He was a major figure in 1962, but went on the achieve stratospheric fame after that. An unusual and collectible piece!
