The Book of Love Art & Poetry, 1996
Limited Edition Artist's Book of Poems and Prints. Offset Lithographs. Plate Signed Robert Indiana and Numbered
6 × 4 1/2 in
Limited edition vintage collectors' item. The Book of Love Art & Poetry makes a terrific gift. This is a scarce, long sold out 32 page plate signed illustrated poetry collection bound in a limited edition hand numbered softcover book with stiff wraps by Robert Indiana. The back cover has a fold-out illustrated flap, featuring the iconic LOVE image and his bold, classic plate signature. This special edition published exclusively for the 19th annual Artexpo New York, as part of a retrospective of Indiana's work. It was designed to promote the signed, limited edition portfolio of Robert Indiana's LOVE works, each of which is depicted in this book. The iconography first appeared in a series of poems originally written in 1958, in which Indiana stacked "LO" and "VE" on top of one another, and then in a painting with the words "Love is God." The red/green/blue image then appeared on a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964. It was put on an eight-cent U.S. Postal Service postage stamp in 1973, the first of their regular series of "love stamps." Each print in the larger, signed portfolio is reproduced in this book and accompanied by a Robert Indiana poem. 15 color illustrations, including front and back covers. (only a few shown). We don't show Indiana's poetry here, but the book has images as well as poems and it says it all. Makes a memorable - and highly collectible - gift.
