Edition of 50

This is one of the more scarce (edition of only 50) Robert Indiana silkscreens from the late 1970s. Judging from this artwork's title MECCA, as well as the text in the middle, one could not be faulted for assuming it is a tribute to the eponymous holy city in Saudi Arabia. However, its origins are far less exotic: in 1977 Robert Indiana was commissioned to design the basketball court for the Milwaukee Exposition Convention Center Arena (MECCA) in Wisconsin. According to the catalogue raisonne (Sheehan, p. 59), this work was based upon Indiana's original cut-paper maquette of his design. MECCA II (one of three silkscreens the artist created) is signed, dated, titled and numbered in pencil from the limited edition of only 50.
