Book Description
New York: Abrams, [1985] First edition. Cloth. Quarto. With 766 illustrations, including 741 in color, of which 81 are full-page hand-tipped colorplates From the blurb:
"Few artists of the twentieth century explored color so thoroughly and so successfully as Morris Louis. Emerging between the generations of abstract expressionism and color field minimalism, he evolved a unique style that effectively extended the frontiers of painting. His ultimate goal was to unite active draftmanship and colorism (achieved through staining unprimed canvas with pure color) with structural coherence. The results of his search are works of intense feeling and majestic power, as evidenced in his three major series, The Veils, Unfurleds, and Stripes. Morris Louis: The Complete Paintings provides the perfect medium in which to view his accomplishment. Each of his 655 known works (with the exception of those few for which photographs are unavailable) is reproduced in color in the catalogue raisonne section of the book. In addition, there are 81 paintings reproduced in full-color, full-page tipped-in plates; an appendix of experimental works never before reproduced; and documentary illustrations, in both color and black-and-white, that shed light on Morris Louis' artistic and personal life." This huge book is in very good condition, other than creasing, scuffing and wear to the dust jacket front sides and back. There is some minor staining to the inside book cover at the outer edges (underneath dust jacket) and the exterior side opposite the spine (open pages) appears somewhat creased or bunched. (see images) Inside pages are very clean and crisp. The book is NOT ex-library; there are NO markings; the dust jacket blurb is not clipped and it is otherwise in good to very good condition for its age.
This is a very expensive, scarce and desirable -and long out of print- CATALOGUE RAISONNE. A must have for anybody who collects, or sells the work of this MAJOR 20th century painter, and a terrific reference for true fans of this great artist.
