Description

MIRIAM LATOUR SHAPIRO

Mardi Gras, 1991

Mixed Media Acrylic on Vinyl

Hand signed recto

52 inches (vertical) x 32 inches (horizontal)

Miriam Latour Shapiro began painting at the late age of 70 years old. The result was a remarkable series of works, documented in a monograph by Colleen Becker called "Mysterious Late Excellence", a referring to that elusive quality that sometimes graces an older artist, as John Berryman wrote memorably of William Carlos Williams.   The present mixed media work is an acrylic painting on a vinyl sheet laid to canvas and is in excellent condition. It was a gift of the artist's daughter. It is reproduced in a full page in the catalogue "Mysterious Late Excellence" (shown), which features critical essays by Colleen Becker. In the original artist's wood frame.

Shapiro's works rarely come to market.
