Description
Mark di Suvero
Project for Sculpture in Chalon-sur-Saône, 1992
Marker, Watercolor and Ink Wash on Paper.
Hand signed and dated by artist on lower right front
The rare signed watercolor by Mark di Suvero was a sculptural proposal created in 1992 for the town of Chalon-sur-Saone in France - one of the most influential places in the artist's long career. In the 1970s di Suvero lived in the industrial French town of Chalon-sur-Saône, on a houseboat anchored next to a waterfront shipyard, where he used cranes and cherry pickers to create a series of large-scale sculptures made of steel I-Beams. He was financed by a wealthy Frenchman who owned a steelyard, paid the artist's expenses, promoted his career and arranged exhibitions for him. As a result, in 1975, Mark di Suvero became the first artist to have a solo show at the Jardin des Tuileries in France --where many of his massive sculptures, with their large, familiar industrial I-Beam tripods, where exhibited. This drawing is annotated with the text: île Saint-Laurent and la Saône - all parts of Chalon-sur-Saône
The text of this proposal reads as follows:
La Saone
Ile St Laurent
Le Pont
For fans and collectors of Mark di Suvero's work and career, this is an extremely rare and desirable original drawing, referencing one of the most influential places periods in his career.
