Description
JOHN CHAMBERLAIN
A Retrospective Exhibition
by Diane Waldman
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York
1971 1st Edition
Limited Edition: 1 of only 2000 Stated Copies
This is the extremely rare limited edition softcover catalogue with stiff wraps published on the occasion of Chamberlain's first Guggenheim retrospective in 1971.
In addition to the scholarly essay by Diane Waldman, it features excerpts from a conversation between Elizabeth C. Baker, John Chamberlain, Don Judd and Diane Waldman, in 1971.
The catalogue features 104 black and white and color plates. At the end is a Checklist of all 109 works as well as a bibliography.
The last end page expressly states: 2000 copies of this catalogue designed by Malcolm Grear, typeset by Craftsman Type, Inc. have been printed by Scroll Press, Inc. in December 1971 for the trustees of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation on the occasion of the exhibition "John Chamberlain: A Retrospective Exhibition." It is EXTREMELY RARE thus.
The catalogue measures 8.5 by 10 inches and has 104 pages. There is notable shelfwear to the cover (front and back) and esp. around the stress points, but the interior page are clean and fresh and it is otherwise in very good condition.
NOT ex-library; NO markings whatsoever.
An incredibly uncommon and very important limited edition vintage reference on the work of this major American sculptor. A must have for serious collectors and dealers in the works of John Chamberlain.
The 2012 Guggenheim catalogue was not a limited edition, whereas this 1971 volume was printed in an incredibly low edition of only 2000.
An absolute collectors item. Scarce.
