This vintage woodcut on paper was created by Minimalist sculptor Joel Shapiro for the Jewish Museum in 1987 - to celebrate the year 5748 of the Jewish Calendar, beginning in September 1987 (Rosh Hashanah). The work is unframed, in very good condition, and published by Pace Prints in a small edition of only 54. The number 54 has special significance in Jewish gamatria (numerology). The Pentateuch (Torah) is divided into fifty four (54) weekly sections, called Parasha or Sidra by the Jews. The Parasha is read in the synagogue during the morning office of the Shabbat. But, more pertinent number 54 equals three times life - or Chai. The number for Chai, meaning Life is 18, and 18 x 3 = 54. This is a magical number in Judaism.
