Artist's Statement:

“I started this painting in April in Provincetown MA, while I had just found out my fellowship at the Fine Art Work Center was going to be extended until June. Well not exactly extended but the artists were able to stay living at the Work Center and working in our studios. It was a relief and a solace as the coronavirus spread across the world. In my isolation in that world I often wished I was with Daisy, my family dog ,and truth be told sister, I longed to have that animal companionship. By June, Daisy passed away from congestive heart failure at 12;  we all miss her terribly. It is so hard to be home and walking through this world full of loss and despair without her cheer, comfort, love and companionship, she was a true star.”

This work was cited for special commendation by the judge, art historian David Cohen, publisher and editor of Artcritical, who wrote,

"Daisy lives forever in this powerful painting”

placed on exploration of formal and technical concerns, examining the complexity inherent in oil painting processes. Exercises will include painting from life, practical color theory, color mixing, en plain air landscape painting and figure work with the model. Initially, painting is monochromatic (lights and darks of one color) to understand value and then students’ progress toward a limited palette to understand temperature and saturation of color, ultimately transitioning to a full, spectral palette. Students will develop a strong painting practice as well as deepen skills in the handling of paint.
