This is the very work that was featured at the monumental 1983 print retrospective at the Whitney Museum of 20th Century master artist-scholar Frank Stella. Amazing provenance and Whitney museum and Richard Gray gallery labels. This work is also listed in the catalogue that accompanied this historic Stella museum retrospective.

We have not found any another Stella print from that Whitney museum exhibition come to market. This is especially historic as it was from his first Whitney Museum print retrospective -- at the old building before the Whitney moved to the meat packing district downtown.

A magnificent multi color lithograph and screenprint with superb provenance as this very piece was exhibited by the Richard Gray Gallery as well as the Whitney Museum of American Art in the early 1980s for its much touted print retrospective: "Frank Stella Prints 1967-1982".

This screenprint and offset litograph was made in 44 runs from 37 plates and 3 screens - same elements as Shards IV, with the addition of 11 plates and 2 screens. It is sold framed and measures 46 inches (vertical) by 40.5 inches (horizontal). The sheet itself measures 45.5 inches by 39.25 inches.

This work is fully referenced in the catalogue raisonne of Frank Stella's prints. (Axsom, Hudson Hills Press, 1983) as well as the Whitney exhibition catalogue.
