This softcover book with no dust jacket as issued is hand signed and inscribed in blue and red marker on the title page to Cheryl + Bill. The two green Harlequin figures are printed on the title figure, but Hockney hand drew embellishments in red marker underneath and a French flag on top , and used the red and blue colors of the French flag to sign and inscribe the work. (In the 1970s' Hockney famously had a studio in Paris, and he befriended many American expatriates during that era.)

This monograph was published in 1983 on the occasion of the Hockney Paints the Stage exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London, 1 August - 29 September, 1985.
