This unique, poignant piece has very special provenance. It was a gift from the artist to Brenda Miller, an important, avant-garde feminist Post-Minimalist artist, who was/is a lifelong friend of Carl Andre.  In the early 1970s, Miller and Andre exhibited together at the John Weber gallery, alongside Nancy Holt, Hans Haacke and others. A contemporaneous male reviewer described Miller's work as "craft". In a letter to Artforum, Miller objected to this classification as a sexist way of dismissing women's work, noting that male artists, like Claes Oldenburg, used similar soft industrial materials - but were never marginalized the way she was. Carl Andre came immediately to Miller's defense, writing his own powerful letter to Artforum, which was published at the same time. He remains to this day a loyal supporter of Miller's pioneering work.  The present work is accompanied by a signed COA, bearing the unique inventory number assigned by the Carl Andre and Melissa L. Kretschmer Foundation, and is included in the catalogue raisonne of Carl Andre's unique sculptures.
