Description
This is a very interesting vintage (1991) letter from Dusseldorf sent by Carl Andre to his sister, school teacher Joan Balerna from Massachusetts. The letter is dated 11 December 1991, with a dateline of Dusseldorf 11:15 pm done in felt tipped pen. It is written in all caps and reads:
"DEAR JOAN: IT IS CLEAR, STILL & FREEZING HERE. I HOPE YOU ARE WARM, COMFORTABLE & WELL. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU DID A CARTWHEEL? NO DON'T TRY IT NOW1 YOU KNOW, I'VE NEVER DONE A CARTWHEEL IN MY LIFE. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN AFRAID TO PUT MY CENTER OF GRAVITY HIGHER THAN MY KNEES. IT IS PROBABLY FORGOTTEN, BUT I WANT TO OFFICIALLY CANCEL MY SCHEME FOR YOU & CAROL TO SHARE A PHILANTHROPIC BANK ACCOUNT. PLEASE PUT YOUR SHARE TO WHATEVER USE YOU WANT. I WROTE OFF THE AMOUNT SOME TIME AGO. LOVE TO YOU & YOURS. @."
-----------------
For those keeping score, the letter was written about half a decade after Ana Mendieta's death. While his observations are clearly addressing the image of his chosen postcard, it is still eery to hear Carl Andre confess his fear of heights to his sister. And we should note that his signature @ foreshadows the twitter handles of decades later. He should have copyrighted it
