Product Description

Sean Scully

provenance

This is a very unusual lot. It was a de-accession by the Cleveland Museum of Art, and includes a woodblock print, as well as the 9 woodblocks that Scully used to make the edition, which he gifted to the Museum. Besides this very set, we've never seen the blocks as well as the print itself - offered for sale together! This rare, limited edition wooden block print is by the famous Irish-born American printmaker Sean Scully. We've never seen a print of Scully's offered with the original blocks that were used to make it - besides this very lot. Only an edition of 30, it is, exceptionally, accompanied by the original 9 wooden blocks that were used in the printing process - making this a very unique ensemble! Scully is known for his painterly abstraction of striped and blocks of layered color. A wonderful addition for any collection of geometric abstraction art. This work is unframed. Other editions of this work are in major institutions such as the Tate Gallery (i.e. see link below for work in Tate's permanent collection) making it less common on the market:
