This is an Original Numbered Silver Relief Sculpture of Salvador Dalis legendary Don Quixote sold by the Martin Lawrence Galleries in Van Nuys, California. This sculpture was made with cast metal and a sterling silver patina. The master mold used to create Don Quixote was created with the highest degree of craftsmanship and was destroyed once the production of the relief sculptures was complete.
Spanish born Salvador Dali(1904-1989) became perhaps one of the most famous and successful Surrealist artists ever. A skilled draftsman and painter, Dali is best known for his striking and often bizarre images often inspired by dreams. His expansive artistic repertoire includes film, sculpture, and photography. Dali is possibly best known for his painting The Persistence of Memory.
Dali was particularly taken by the story of Don Quixote, Cervantes idealistic Spanish nobleman who saw himself as a knight fighting the worlds injustices and serving the causes of truth and beauty. It has been said that Don Quixotes quest was an allegory of the eternal search for goodness and truth, with an idealism that appeared to be madness in a world that sometimes viewed heroism and love as a form of insanity.
This beautiful casting of Dali's "Don Quixote" is numbered I-27 from the Silver edition of 175, which is the edition produced for the international market.
It is housed in the original gorgeous blue velvet presentation box with white letters, along with the original tirage and documentation from Martin Lawwrence Editions.
The sculpture itself measures 26 inches by 19 by 1 inches and the presentation box measures 28.5 x 21 x 3 inches. It is ready to hang as a bas relief.
The presentation box if often separated from the sculpture so it is especially valuable to have the set together. There is some scuffing and corner bumping to the presentation box, which is otherwise in very good condition and the sculpture is in excellent condition and would make a most memorable gift.
For fans of Salvador Dali, and for students and admirers of the legend of Don Quixote, this is quite a magical sculpture.
Makes a superb gift.
