Product Description

Dorothy Dehner (American, 1901–1994)
Mid Century Modern Abstract Watercolor, 1949
Mixed Media watercolor, charcoal, ink on paper
4 x 5 in. (10.16 x 12.7 cm.)
Hand signed and dated by Dorothy Dehner on recto (front) in ink
lower left front; Also bears the ink notation on the verso, with
the last name "Groff" and the address 432 West 22nd Street (which
is today a townhouse in Chelsea, New York City) written in ink, presumably in Ms.
Dehner's hand.

For offer here is an extremely rare, unique hand signed mid century modern
abstract mixed media work on paper by renowned artist Dorothy Dehner.
Works from this era are extremely hard to come by.
Authenticity is guaranteed.

Dehner studied at the Art Students League with Jan Matulka and others and
worked with the legendary Stanley Hayter at Atelier 17, where Mark Rothko,
Adolph Gottlieb, Alexander Calder, Jacques Lipchitz, Pablo Picasso, Louise
Bourgeois and so many others passed through. Although Dehner is perhaps
best known as the wife of the great American sculptor David Smith, she has
always been recognized as a fine artist in her own right and has been the
subject of several important museum retrospectives and survey shows.

This work is hand signed and dated 1949 on the recto (front) and bears the name "Groff" and a Chelsea, New York City address in the artist's hand on the verso.

In very good vintage condition, with deckle edges and natural ink bleed.  A
rare and very valuable gem of a small piece. Would look terrific framed.
Works from this era by Dorothy Dehner are quite scarce and desirable.
