CY TWOMBLY (American 1928-2011)
Leo Castelli Gallery, 1967
Offset Lithograph/Invitation Mailer
For offer here is an extremely rare historic offset lithograph invitation for Cy Twombly's historic October 7, 1967 exhibition in which his grey paintings were exhibited for the first time ever.
It measures 25.5 inches by 21.5 inches and is matrix signed center right in the plate. The mailer is shown when opened up, and also folded, as it was mailed. This one bears the original postmark of October 4, 1967 and it has some pinholes on the top corners as it was originally pinned up in the recipient's studio. The folds and corner creases (from having been actually sent in the mail) and tiny thumbtack holes will frame out fine!
The provenance is superb on this piece. We acquired it from Swann Auction house, as part of the sale of pieces from the Estate of Liam O'Gallagher who died in 2007. He was an avant-garde sound artist, painter and teacher whose San Francisco studio became an early gathering place for Beat writers and poets in the 1950s. He was integral to the creation of foundations and centers for human growth, including Feathered Pipe Ranch, the Ojai Foundation and Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts.
Although the original consignor attempted to block out Mr. O'Gallagher's name from the mailer, it still shows through and it is visible and clearly apparent on the other Castelli and Pace mailers from the same lot that we acquired.
An extremely rare and desirable piece of art history - and a must have for fans of Cy Twombly, as well as collectors of vintage ephemera from the legendary Leo Castelli Gallery, the brilliant dealer who represented Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Cy Twombly and many others -- but is perhaps best known as the dealer who discovered Jasper Johns and, who, along with his former wife, the innovative Ileanna Sonnabend, helped catapult Johns and other American Abstract & Pop artists to international superstardom.
This is one of the more elusive nd valuable early Castelli lithographic poster invitations. Own a piece of art history! This would look great in any home or gallery!
