Mary M. Canton Canadian Painting SIGNED Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Label 1952

Description

This fantastic lot consists of TWO Flower paintings!

Here is a beautiful hand signed museum exhibited UNIQUE vintage oil painting on board by Canadian painter Mary M. Canton, in its ORIGINAL mid Century frame.

The work was exhibited in 1952 at the prestigious 69th Annual Spring Exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Canada.

(As an added bonus, with this purchase we will second a second unsigned and unframed watercolor painting by the same artist for FREE. The framed piece with museum label is signed, the second work isn't.)

The framed painting has superb provenance and bears the label of the Montreal Museum of Art on the verso of the original period frame, along with the painting's title - Iris - and the artist's name and home address.

It measures 17 inches (horizontal) by 20.25 inches vertical. The paintings is signed on the recto. It is undated, but as the exhibition was in 1952, it is circa 1952.

This work is in very good vintage condition with bright colors. There are some specks of color loss, most notably on the left purple Iris petal, which can either be restored or left as is. (see jpegs) It is otherwise in good condition. The wooden frame is clearly old and there are nicks and dents, but nothing has been changed to preserve original provenance.

For decades, the Annual Spring Exhibition at the Montreal Museum was one of the most prestigious shows in Canada. The 69th Annual exhibition of 1952 had particular historical importance. For context and background only on that show, below is a link to an interesting article:

It was obviously an honor for an artist to be selected to exhibit in this show.

The Iris flower also has special significance: with history dating back to Greek mythology, irises come in a rainbow of colors, the most popular being the deep blue variety. Their primary meanings include faith, hope, wisdom, courage, and admiration.

What better than to give this vintage "IRIS" painting with an original major museum label to someone special.

A unique and thoughtful gift - and a rare find with MUSEUM provenance!

Ships framed.

In addition, the winning buyer will also receive a second BEAUTIFUL unframed and unsigned watercolor by the same artist Mary Canton that accompanies the lot. They belong together and they both should go to the same worthy and appreciative collector. The unsigned painting, also of flowers in a vase measures 12 inches (horizontal) and 17.75 inches (vertical). There is some mounting tape attached from having been previously framed, which can easily be removed or framed out. It is otherwise in fine condition and is included FREE with the framed and signed painting from the Montreal Museum of Art.

This lot is for BOTH works! Winning collector will be delighted!

UNCONDITIONALLY guaranteed authentic: NO questions; NO quibbles. Comes with a Certificate of Guarantee.

This is a UNIQUE one-of-a-kind find. You won't find another like this anywhere!
