After LOUISE BOURGEOIS, I Have Been to Hell and Back, Limited Edition Embroidered handkerchief, 2007
This super rare, extremely desirable embroidered handkerchief was created in three variations, pink, red, and blue, this one being the red edition with matching embroidery. This work was published on the occasion of Louise Bourgeois' 2007–2008 exhibition at the Tate Modern, London, selling out shortly after. What makes this work especially collectible is that the design was created and authorized during the artist's lifetime in collaboration with the Tate and Third Drawer Down. It bears Bourgeois' iconic and memorable phrase, "I Have Been to Hell and Back and Let Me Tell You It Was Wonderful." This edition long sold out and is extremely difficult to find on the secondary market. The blue and pink versions -- which are also extremely scarce, do come to market from time to time, but other than this very one -- the red has not come to market - and once this one is sold, it's gone. We've been scouring the world for the red one for seven years, and there are no comparables on the auction databases -- it's that scarce!!
This work is in unusually excellent, as new condition, with the original bright hues preserved and not washed or faded, unlike many that have come to market. It bears the original folds, as the Tate sold these works folded in very small envelopes.
This will look terrific when framed and exhibited. A great investment piece - and a terrific conversation item for the lucky buyer of this gem.
